The dark blues and harsh browns represent the ‘one step forward, two steps back’ progress made at the beginning of our family’s journey. Through perseverance, determination, courage and undying love, these colours transition to the turquoises and beiges of forgiveness, humour and companionship, striving always towards the light of peace. In that moment, I felt overwhelming joy, a lightness of spirit and the feeling that anything was possible. An extra layer of wool batting between the front and back gives texture to the extensive thread-work throughout the piece. The range of colour adds to the interest and movement, which reflect the excitement and sheer joy of being alive, experienced by the artist’s daughter. An extra layer of wool batting between the front and back gives texture to the extensive thread-work throughout the piece. The range of colour adds to the interest and movement, which reflect the excitement and sheer joy of being alive, experienced by the artist’s daughter. My vision was to create a huge, fibre art family tree, with each of my 102 extended family members on my dad’s side being represented by their own log cabin square. I created and sent out a twelve-part questionnaire, whose answers would act as a guide to colour and fabric selection. Most of the family responded, and do indeed have their own, unique colourful square, while some declined and others did not get in touch - these are represented by a white log cabin. Each question corresponds to a colour, and the individual answers are represented by a specific fabric within that colour way. The red and pink stitching that runs throughout the piece is the heartbeat that flows from our Oma and Opas; the over 3000 fused coloured leaves, strewn throughout, represent the six branches of the family. School age children and toddlers answered to their own questionnaire, while the babies are represented by a generic pastel fabric. All of our names, birth and death dates were free-motion stitched into the bottom of the individual squares. The deceased have a log cabin muted with black netting – close family members contributed questionnaire answers on their behalf.
