Free to Fly

$1200.00 (piece must stay with body of work until end of exhibit run)

58”H x 24”W

2023

Free to Fly represents my Granddaughters:

b. 2016, 2021
All three girls live in Winnipeg; two share the same birth year
They have heard stories and seen pictures of their great and great-great grandmothers
The girls are unaware of the devastation of what the older women experienced in their lives and the effects of mental illness
They are surrounded by parents, grandparents, friends who are both young and old, play-dates, pets, love, security, stability, opportunity

Art Piece: Using sky and bird-themed fabrics, the random piecing of the rectangles suggests a lightness and freedom that was not present in the earlier pieces, as this seventh panel of WomanKind comes full circle. Using the table runner stitched by great-great grandmother, Katherine as a focal point, reinforces the presence and respect for those who came before us, and the gratitude for the sacrifices and gifts they have passed along through the generations.

Panel 7 in WomanKind, from the Drawn Together Collective’s exhibit Stimulus/Response at the Mennonite Heritage Gallery in Winnipeg, MB from November 10 - December 9, 2023.
