Scraps of Life

$1500.00 (piece must stay with body of work until end of exhibit run)

80”H x 22”W

2023

Scraps of Life represents my Oma in Canada:

Arrived in Canada in 1925
Lived in a poor part of Winnipeg as a lay preacher’s wife; widowed in her early 60’s
Co-habitated with her widowed sister for the rest of her life, and ended up in the Bethania Nursing Home in Winnipeg
d. 1980
Suffered from nervous and mental issues throughout her life; no one talked about these times and what the family had experienced
Loved and cherished by her four grandchildren

Art Piece: Textiles represent the colours and types of fabric that she wore in Canada, including cottons, wool and an embroidered runner she made for her own kitchen table. Individual rectangles randomly stitched together, then cut into squares for piecing to suggest a sense of stability and safety.

Panel 3 in WomanKind, from the Drawn Together Collective’s exhibit Stimulus/Response at the Mennonite Heritage Gallery in Winnipeg, MB from November 10 - December 9, 2023.
