Into the Light

$4000.00 (piece must stay with body of work until end of exhibit run)

78”H x 27"W

2014

Into the Light represents my Mom:

b. 1931 d. 2018
2 children born in Winnipeg; university educated and happily married for 62 years
Went back to university in mid-70’s and started her own business in 1983
Suffered with anxiety and mental illness throughout most of her adult life
Was a loving, supportive role-model to her daughters, a generous cook/ hostess to many, and an adored, nurturing Oma to her two grandchildren

Art Piece: Created in 2014 in response to her diagnosis of Schizo-affective disorder, this piece uses traditional technique with a combination of modern cottons, batik, reclaimed material from her stash, and very old found fabrics all cut into two-inch squares. The dark blues and harsh browns represent the ‘one step forward, two steps back’ progress made at the beginning of our family’s journey. Through perseverance, determination, courage and undying love, these colours transition to the turquoises and beiges of forgiveness, humour and companionship, striving always towards the light of peace.

Representing LOVE in the artist’s 2018 solo exhibit ‘Feeling from Without and Within’.

Panel 4 in WomanKind, from the Drawn Together Collective’s exhibit Stimulus/Response at the Mennonite Heritage Gallery in Winnipeg, MB from November 10 - December 9, 2023.
